Public Hearing for Respirable Crystaline Silica Permissible Exposure Limit: December 15, 2017

A public hearing will be held on December 15 regarding Washington L&I’s proposed update to Washington’s occupational health and safety rules to include a respirable crystalline silica permissible exposure limit.   The public comment period will end on December 22.  Read more from L&I.

New Epidemiology Review Evaluates Protection Provided by Current OELs for Silica

The review found that a cricial analysis of the epidemiology supported a qualitative association between occupational exposure to silica and obstructive lung function, but the data quality was not sufficient to calculate a quantitative relationship or define a threshold above which there was an increased risk.

Two New Studies Provide Additional Evidence of a Increased Risk for Lung Cancer in Welders

Welding it togetherOne study was conducted in mice (Falcone et al., 2017), the other is a human epidemiology study (Wong et al., 2017).  The exact agent responsible for the potential increase has not been identified.

New Continuing Ed Program Offered by NWCOHS: Assessing Biological and Chemical Risks in the Workplace

From NWCOHS: “This course will not only provide a useful framework for all safety managers but will illustrate lessons learned and best practices through a variety of case studies. This approach will demonstrate the utility of the risk assessment frame in safety management. Practical “in field” experiences will be shared that should allow the attendee to save time and point to effective approaches for daily work as well as for strategic planning.”
